USA, New Jersey - UN: IDP '08 Print E-mail

In a unique gesture to commemorate the UN's International Day of Peace, faith leaders from New Jersey embarked on a "Peace Boat" to offer prayers and a peace ceremony in front of both the Statue of Liberty and the United Nations.

The journey around the tip of Manhattan Island to the UN was difficult because of the weather; there was a small craft warning that day. But all on board were committed to mark the International Day of Peace on the East River overlooking the United Nations complex.

Participants included Ralph Oppenheimer and Rev. Barry Geller representing UPF in New Jersey, Rev. Michael Sykes of the United Missionary Baptist Church, Rev. Leah Ayoo of the Association of Christian Evangelists, Dr. Dawud Assad of the Islamic Center of South Jersey, and Rev. Kigundu Ndwiga and Pastor George Okumu both of the 7th Day Adventist Church.

For the "Peace Ceremony" participants each poured their own holy water into one common bowl and prayed for peace. Then they emptied the larger container into the sea, praying that all humankind can connect to our common Source and Creator.
