New York, NY, USA - On this day, September 11, many of us, and perhaps especially those of us based in New York, reflect on the darker capacities of human hearts and minds that can drive the most inhumane behavior. The actions of a few on this day eight years ago led to the deaths of thousands along with a wide range of destructive collateral actions. On this day, let us pause to consider not only the evil that may be done by others, but to also consider also the ways in which all of us can do more for peace, for justice, for reconciliation. Just a few weeks after the September 11 tragedy, the UPF [then known as IIFWP] convened religious leaders from Islam and Christianity, Judaism and all faiths, to search together for reconciliation and cooperative action steps for peace in our world. It was a courageous step. At that time, few dared to fly, especially to New York, and hotels were empty. But many men and women from every background did come to New York for that conference, one outgrowth of which was a Muslim Summit, later held in Jakarta. |
