WFWP, USA and the International Day of Peace

Twelve chapter events in 2008


Washington, DC

The Washington DC chapter of Women’s Federation for World Peace held a meeting on Saturday, September 20, with the theme “The Role of Women in Bringing Peace” in commemoration of the International Day of Peace.  The keynote speaker was Ms. Carmen Lezzi, United Nations Association Chair for the National Capital Area for the UN Millennium Development Goals. Ms.Lezzi is also Executive Director of the Fair Trade Federation.

Washington State 

The Seattle chapter participated in the IDP celebration, on September 21, at the Bellevue Community College (BCC) in the Seattle Metro area, as a co-sponsor. BCC is the largest community college in Western Washington. The program ran from 6-9 PM and included a Peace Concert with Dana Lyons, a Giant Peace Dove Parade, a Circle Dance World Peace Prayer Ceremony with national flags representing 190 nations from around the world, Candle Lighting and other displays of art, music, stories and poems of peace. WFWP and UPF set up a display table during the first hour of the program.

Alabama

On Saturday the 20th, ACLC and WFWP held a prayer breakfast at Bishop Wesley James’ church in Pritchard, Alabama.  There were two speakers. Rev. Rawls from Selma represented ACLC and Councilwoman Erlene Harris represented WFWP. This was followed by a Bridge of Peace ceremony and a youth service project.

Texas, Houston

The Houston chapter held a Prayer for Peace as part of the Worship Services at the Gloryland Missionary Baptist Church, a memorial to those who lost their lives in Hurricane Ike.  The congregations of three churches participated in this event: Gloryland, Will of God Family Church, and Family Federation.

 Texas, Dallas

The Dallas chapter held a meeting on Sunday, Sept. 28th. The guest speaker was Carol Crabtree Donovan, Peacemakers International, who spoke on "Empowering Peacemakers." Laura Hornbeck gave a brief presentation on the international activities of WFWP, including WFWP’s foundation in the UN.

New York, Upstate New York Chapter

The Upstate New York Chapter sponsored a daylong event which began with a   Worship Service and sermon with a member of the local clergy on "Caring for our Ancestors", followed by a prayer vigil. Afternoon activities included “kite flying for peace”, a peace concert featuring Cecilia St. King, Hope Machine and Seiko Lee. A potluck was shared and enjoyed at the Peace Sanctuary and Labyrinth. The day closed with a peace flag ceremony.  The event was co-sponsored by the Ambassadors for Peace Association and WFWP.  This event will be held annually.

Ohio

The Ohio chapter sponsored a dinner to welcome the family of Norah Bagirinka to America. Norah Bagirinka is a Rwandan Genocide Survivor who helped make the Emmy award winning film, “God Sleeps in Rwanda.” The dinner included a heartfelt commemoration of IDP.

The Wisconsin Chapter set up a table at the Capitol steps in Madison on Saturday, September 20.

Northern California

The Bay Area celebrated IDP during its chapter meeting on September 28 with a prayer for peace by 
representatives of twelve nations.

New York, Metro New York Chapter

The Metro New York chapter partnered with the Unitarian Universalist in Stony Brook, for an event which included peace doves, the ringing of bells, and a moment of silence for world peace. They also arranged for children to write both presidential candidates, Senator McCain and Senator Obama, encouraging them to work for peace.

Maryland

The Maryland chapter held a meeting with the theme of “Peaceful Heart, Peaceful Home, Peaceful World.  The main speaker was “Yarrow”, a Feng Shui consultant, author, and business owner.  Yarrow spoke about the importance of managing our personal energy and the energy in our homes to create a peaceful atmosphere.  Chairwoman Diane Abendroth explained the purpose of the International Day of Peace.

Southern California

As a co-sponsor of the GPF in Los Angeles, in commemoration of the International Day of Peace week, the Southern California chapter of WFWP helped to organize four events, including a speech contest, a drawing contest, the ringing of the peace bell, and peace kite flying with the Brahma Kumaris.
